bartlett's familiar quotations, 17th ed.

"kingdoms are but cares,
state is devoid of stay;
riches are ready snares,
and hasten to decay." /henry vi, 1769
(pg. 139)

musicophilia, by oliver sacks

"color-key association goes both ways for david; seeing a piece of transparent golden-yellow glass on my windowsill put him in mind of b-flat major. ('something clear and golden about that key,' he said.)" (pg. 172)

nothing like it in the world, by stephen ambrose

"[abe] lincoln represented the rock island bridge company in the landmark case. he went to the river and examined the rebuilt bridge, mesasured the currents in the river, and interviewed river men, all based on his experience as a pilot." (pg. 30)

bobos in paradise, by david brooks

"free spirituality can lead to lazy spirituality, religiosity masquerading as religion, and finally to the narcissism of the new age movement. the toppling of old authorities has not led to a glorious new dawn but instead to an alarming loss of faith in institutions and to spiritual confusion and social breakdown." (pg. 227)

windsurf - coastlines

Windsurf happily keep their own counsel while peaking from underneath a tipped sunhat. Retreating to keep contentment on the low makes Judd and Grawe as much in awe of the spells they stir up; certainly when the title track’s cooing synths play hide and seek and then mimic the tide coming in and out. Key to Windsurf’s cleanliness is letting these synths go and explore. Tracks wander and jangle in tiers of full-bodied tumbles, wide-eyed and rapt. Any use of a slide guitar as on the smiling ‘The Big Island’ means idyllic recuperation is a gimme, and partially removing the tempo altogether on the finale ‘Crystal Neon’ gives the feathered layers of keys a free role in soul massage. /fact

delicious found:

sweet potato fries

sea scallops in a fig balsamic vinegar reduction, garnished with chocolate mint

homemade honey cashew pecan butter on a banana

cider and cheese from normandy

the cider tastes like a delicious, more refined martinelli's with more numerous, tiny bubbles and less of a sugary onslaught against your tastebuds. this bubbliness has a scrubbing effect on your palate, making it (and beer, too) a great symbiosis for robust cheeses. as the cider slides down your throat, the appley carbonation leaves a feeling of the tiniest, fuzziest, softest pipe cleaner flossing your nasal cavity with tingly goodness. seriously. it is fantastic.

from my cheese primer book, camembert:

who else but a cheese fanatic would write a description of the stuff's ripeness in such a manner.

related:

The Persistence of Memory is one of the most famous paintings by artist Salvador Dalí. The painting has also been popularly known as Soft Watches or Melting Clocks. The original idea of this painting came to Dalí on a hot summer's day. He was at home with a headache while Gala, his wife, was out shopping. After his meal he noticed some half eaten Camembert cheese and how runny it had become on account of the heat of the sunny day. That night, while he had been searching his soul for something to paint, he had a dream of clocks melting on a landscape. He went back to the unfinished piece he had been working on, which had a plain landscape with rocky cliffs in the background and a tree on a platform. Over two or three hours he added in the melting pocket watches which made this the iconic image it is today. [via]
